BURE HOMAGE, in Highcliffe
Probably Old English 'bi oran' or 'by the bank/shore' (cf Gelling 1984: 173-82). Bure is close to the present seashore. 'Homage' commemorates the place's relationship with Christchurch Priory, and is the only survivor of several such medieval place names in Ha.
